Re-imagining pioneer square

In 2022, Open Studio students explored historic Pioneer Square in Downtown Seattle. After visiting Occidental Park and conducting a site analysis, students generated a client profile, and wrote a program for a design intervention on the site. The sample project below is the result of a collage exercise made from old magazine clippings, and a form finding exercise designed to draw inspiration from the needs of the student's imagined client.

My client is a plant and nature educator. She wanted to build a conservatory filled with plants, flowers, and trees on one of the walking pathways in Occidental Square. My building form is very organic since the roof of the building is curved and not linear. The building is a long-curved corridor shaped in a dome with an open exit door and an overhang for shade. My sustainability goals are to make sure to use natural light throughout the whole building and use natural materials. The materials I want to use in my building are wood and glass. I want the shelves inside to be wood and any partition walls to be created with wood. The glass windows will cover the dome and each window can be opened which brings more daylight in the building for the plants. The exit door is a Nana door that is all glass that allows the building to be open to public though also locked up during closing times. I want my building to blend in the Square and to cause more attraction.
