DESIGN INTERVENTION ON PIER 62

Seattle is in the process of a once-in-a-lifetime reconstruction. With the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in 2019, the city has been reconnected to the waterfront once again for the first time in nearly 70 years. This new opportunity has presented new challenges: How can city infrastructure benefit wildlife habitat? How can cities be more resilient to the effects of climate change? How can new public spaces appeal to all users, and create a just and equitable built environment?

In 2023, Open Studio re-imagined the Seattle Waterfront, proposing structures and design interventions along Pier 62. The student projects explored the many facets in which Architecture responds to human stories, ecological systems, and urban fabrics. Through the lens of sustainability and resource stewardship, Open Studio investigated ways to reconnect Seattle and its people to the Puget Sound.

a space for all

A Space for All is a pavilion designed to improve the existing children's facilities on Pier 62, which are underwhelming for families. The new structure is inclusive of all age groups, and makes the pier into a place where both parents and children can enjoy the park.

place for respite

A Place for Respite improves upon many of the problems of the existing site: no restrooms or water, lots of heat with no shade, and not enough attractions to compete with the aquarium. The new pavilion provides seating, walking, playing, restroom facilities, and drinking water, next to a bright, open outdoor playground to be used during the day. Colored skylights wash the interior restroom with calm blue light, making the space inviting for families.

Sports Complex challenged the project brief by going bigger. By taking on the entire site, the project creates a sports and culture hub to draw people together at the waterfront.
